Choosing Carbon Filters!
Carbon filters are the most common and cost effective water filters on the market today. Although there are many
forms of water filtration like
reverse osmosis, percolin, distilled water filtration units, which is not really filtration ,granular and
and of course what we are now reveiwing, carbon filtration.

Carbon is the substance that has long been used to absorb impurities and is perhaps the most powerful
absorbent known to man. One pound of carbon contains a surface area of roughly 125 acres and can absorb literally
thousands of different chemicals. This is an incredible surface area ratio compared to the square inch volume of
such water filters.
Carbon Filters can also be activated to make them even more absorbive of water impurities. Activated carbon is
carbon which has a slight electro-positive charge added to it, making it even more attractive to chemicals and
impurities. As the water passes over the positively charged carbon surface, the negative ions of the contaminants
are drawn to the surface of the carbon granules. A very effective technology.
You will find that carbon water filters are among the cheapest and most readily available on the market today with
all general stores distributing simple, but effective carbon filtration systems. For removal of general
contaminents from your tap water, this is the fastest and easiest way to assure protection of your family through
water filtration.
Water filters have a long history as a method of water purification, beginning as early as 2000 b.c.e. in ancient
Egypt. Filtration has evolved from the simple Hippocratic sleeve of ancient Greece which is a simple water filter
designed by Hippocrates of ancient Greece consisting of a cloth sleeve through which water was poured
to the complicated solid block carbon and multilevel water filters currently on the market.
Depending upon the type of filtration system used, water filtration may be a less than ideal form of water
purification. For example, granular filters do not utilize the chemical adsorption process, allowing several
contaminants to pass through the filter media. Likewise, rapid water filters allow water inadequate contact time
with the filter media, limiting the number of contaminants that may be removed. Solid block carbon filter units solve
both of these problems by using both adsorptive and slow filtration processes. Carbon filtration is
absolutely the best and most effective water filters available.
But please do not confuse carbon filters with reverse osmosis or distillation which are neither really classed
as a form of water filtration.
Carbon filtration is a method of filtering that uses a piece of activated carbon to remove contaminants and
impurities, utilizing chemical adsorption. Each piece of carbon is designed to provide a large section of surface
area, in order to allow contaminants the most possible exposure to the filter media.
Interesting Fact (Wikipedia): - One pound (454g) of activated carbon contains a surface area of approximately 100 acres or in metric, (1 kmē/kg). One pound would be around about the size of your fist. This carbon is generally activated with a
positive charge and is designed to attract negatively charged water contaminants. Carbon filtering is commonly
used for water purification, but is also used in air purifiers.
Carbon filters are most effective at removing chlorine, sediment, and volatile organic compounds from
water. They are not effective at removing minerals, salts, and dissolved inorganic compounds. This can be good as
the essential minerals that we need for our health stay within the water and we are not so exposed to mineral
deficiency as we could be with reverse osmosis or distillation. But, of course, a tap water supply that is high in
volatile organic compounds could still pass through this filtration system.
So please make your decision wisely and choose the
drinking water
filtration system best for your environment and available
water source. Carbon filter units are the most popular form of water filtration and depending on the quality of brand,
will carry out excellent purification process.
